NAVY Is Always A Good Idea

As the nights draw in and we prepare for the season's change, Virginia James takes over the Journal with an ode to all things Navy...

"Blue, especially Navy is always a good idea. Definitely at this moment as the nights draw in and we enter the seasonal change with confidence and naughtiness combined.

For a few years now I have gradually begun to realise that Navy Blue, like Paris and ink, is always a good idea.

Blue, the colour of velvety midnight skies and of hopeful dawns ...beginning pale, full of ideas and hopefulness. Through to dark, sensual and romantic.

The dark inkiness of Navy Blue is the new front-row Black, favoured by the fashion crowd, Parisians, uniform dressers and city people. It can give you an air of seriousness, good class...and perhaps make you feel more effortlessly together.

This makes life, oh so much simpler.

It is friendlier than Black and feels undoubtedly more modern.

Bring me everything in Navy ....I am packing my weekly travel wardrobe with as many Navy hues as I can. There is nothing more pleasing than a luscious Navy crew-neck sweater with a twist. Add a great blue based print or ...3/4 pleat top tapered pants and you are literally ready-steady-go for the week.

Today I have chosen: A sweet French Navy lace dress and feel at ease, able to think, hoping that the day will bring its own blue sky challenges ...I'm ready.

I think nothing of mixing Black with Navy. In fact, there is a joyous wave of rebellion in mixing these forbidden deadly dark shades together.

So start popping Blues into your wardrobe. Stealthily support Navy. It'll be in your favourites for years to come, assured.

Buy carefully, not frivolously and Blue will reward.

Think of those skies Blue to Blue ...

THINK FRENCH, THINK CHIC, THINK ILLE DE COCOS.

QUI, MOI?

Of course, feeling Blue ...it's time."

Stylist Live Highlights

At our very first pop up shop, we set out to find our wider style tribe. And find them, we did! They flocked from far and wide. But to our pleasant surprise, they also came from within, as the behind-the-scenes team discovered Ille De Cocos knits for the first time. Here are highlights from the show..

Our beautiful postcards created by Silver Lining print and design company.

Visitors were drawn in by our irresistible brights.

Even my fellow exhibitors could not resist leafing through our rail to discover their own dream sweater, each finding the perfect piece to suit their own personal style.

1. Understated, Effortless, Chic:

For Olivia it was the Merino Cropped Sweater, which she layered with ease over her ivory blouse and black skinny jeans.  Browse her beautiful, British-made bag collection at www.olivecooper.com.

2. Timeless Elegance.

For the lovely Jane, only pure Cashmere would do. Our Cashmere Split Hem Sweater worked beautifully with a vintage-inspired necklace and soft tailored trousers in classic navy. Jane's collection of luxury accessories and gifts can be found at www.catherineandjean.com.

3. Modern Feminine:

Stylist's very own Kellyann paid the ultimate homage, choosing our iconic logo sweater which she tucked into a black pleated midi skirt.

Discover your dream sweater here.

My Happy Place....

Alice Pickard, style-seeker and co-founder of Philosophy Squared, takes over the journal to share her favourite London spot for inspiration and vintage finds.

"I would never have imagined that my 'happy place' at the age of 30 would be a furniture shop. It turns out you can surprise yourself....

The furniture shop in question, The Old Cinema will surprise you too! If I'm wandering on the Chiswick High Road (or taking an accidental detour!) I can't help but be drawn in, no matter how much of a rush I'm in or how much money I (don't) have!

Like a West London Aladdin's cave, it is filled to the brim with incredible items from every decade across three jam-packed floors.

I've always been a lover of vintage items but only in moderation. I don't want to have to work too hard to find a previously loved item, but here it seems that most items have been loved for all the right reasons, hugged to death and then restored with care and attention for their next lucky owner...

Housed in the very beautiful but unassuming 1920s frontage of the old picture house, it is home to a whole host of unique and interesting pieces. From costume jewellery to lighting, to clocks, armchairs and dressing tables, it is a joy to have a rummage. The difference here though, is that nearly every piece is eye-catching and you will find yourself justifying the introduction of a large multi-drawer 1930s Art Deco chest into your minimalist London home!

The owners clearly have an eye for vintage luxury and items are either naturally beautiful and timeless, or they had been restored in such a way that there is a feeling that the whole place has been curated with love.

A visit here never fails to excite me. I am now the proud owner of a beautiful chapel chair, a chest of drawers, a phrenology bust and a stunning wall clock and I can always convince myself that I need just one more feather for the nest!"
